As the federal government reforms regulations related to greenhouse gas emissions as well as health care laws, some actions challenge the established scientific and economic links between these policies. The adverse health impacts of climate change are among various considerations for policy decisions. Even when local gains in environmental determinants of health go along with global, long-term health benefits, the influence of health arguments has declined. Nevertheless, there is substantial momentum in government and corporate policies linking health and climate actions. Warren G. Lavey holds advanced degrees in law, applied mathematics and economics from Harvard and Cambridge Universities. After 23 years as a partner in the global law firm Skadden Arps, his focus since 2010 has been on climate change and public health. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois in law, community health, and environmental sciences. His recent publications analyze the roles of hospitals in addressing climate change and community health. He serves on advisory boards for sustainable technologies and public health. 9
